The 3D movie version of Avatar directed by James Cameron, starring Sigourney Weaver, has driven ticket sales to more than $1.14 around the world in just three weeks.
Experts now predict that other films including Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings trilogies will soon be re-released and "retro-fitted"
with the 3D technology, which can be achived in as little as four months.
George Lucas, the director of the original Star Wars series released in 1970’s, added more special effects in 1997 and 2004 and he’s reported to be spending $10m (£6.24m) to turn the Star Wars saga into a 3D experience.
According to Bobby Jaffe, the chairman of Legend Films in San Diego, a company which specializes in converting movies to 3D, several major Hollywood studios had been in contact to revive their best-selling titles into the new format.
"We can turn an older film into 3-D in around 16 weeks"
, he told to the press. "It mostly suits action films, such as Top Gun or The Matrix, but Avatar proved it’s best to use the technology to immerse the audience in the story rather than throw things at them. This is the new, more sophisticated era of 3-D."
"It will quickly become the new norm," said David Wertheimer, director of USC’s entertainment technology centre. It’s no longer a gimmick, but an expectation."
It seems that we won’t have to wait long. Last week in Las Vegas, two major manufacturers of consumer electronics, Sony and LG, revealed 3-D television sets, still requiring special glasses, which will be released this summer. Panasonic presented a prototype 3-D TV with a large 152in screen, possibly more appropriate for pubs and shopping centres than for home viewing.
The tempo of change is speeding up. The first 3-D films on Blu-Ray will be released by Christmas. They will be a mixture of 2010 hits and remastered old classics.
