Emerging writer/ director/ actor Vandal Truong’s short film "White Rabbit" won the Audience Choice Award for Best Picture at this year’s 2009 Hollywood East Film Festival. This year the festival was held in Danbury, Connecticut on April 28, 2009. Over two hundred films were submitted. Thirty films were selected by the festival jury from the categories of shorts, features, music videos, animation, and documentaries

While there is no category for writing, the festival program director John Nelson made a special announcement that "White Rabbit" was the jury’s selection as Best Original Screenplay of the festival. "It is such an honor to be recognized amongst so many great films," remarked winner Vandal Truong.

Vandal Truong, born in Saigon, Vietnam, immigrated to the United States as a child. He feels the award is an indication audiences want to see more diverse films. "It’s a story about an Asian American family but I think people of all backgrounds respond to it so intensely because child abuse happen regardless of race or culture. There are no heroes or villains with child abuse, only survivors." Truong teamed up with Academy Award-winning cinematographer Soopum Sohn for this powerful piece of cinema. "White Rabbit" is a gripping short film about an estranged brother and sister who reunite at their father’s funeral to confront their complex, abusive past. It is portrait of an Asian American family–bold, heartfelt and devoid of stereotypical characters.

Dustin Nguyen ("21 Jumpstreet", Oliver Stone’s "Heaven & Earth"), also a Vietnamese-born actor, says that "White Rabbit is a refreshingly brave piece of work. It is sensitively written and acted. It shines some light on a difficult subject matter in any culture, but particularly so within the Asian-American communities."

Maicau Films, based in New York, is a cutting edge production company that fosters provocative, original material for television and film. The original play "White Rabbit" premiered in 2008 at the Barrow Group Theatre in New York City as a workshop short play. Filmmaker Vandal Truong formed the film company to create an artistic environment that embraces the multicultural world in which we are all a part.
